Have you heard about the film FUEL!? This Sundance Festival award winning film is a powerful documentary on fuel. Throughout this film Josh Tickell shares his views on the world and our environment. This film stars a variety of different environmentalists, policy makers and even entertainment stars. Some of the main topics for this film are suitable living, the world’s addiction to oil and new energy solutions.

Every single person in the world makes a difference each day whether they realize it or not. Every step you take on this planet you leave a footprint behind. The FUEL film inspired me to think about the way I live and the footprint I desire to leave for my future.

This fall semester or quarter you, as college students, will get a chance to see the FUEL film on a campus near you! The Fuel film will be coming to campuses in California to educate students on energy resources, bio fuels, sustainability and eco-friendly living ways. An Experience Worth Remembering

Graduation: Bittersweet, a combination of the pleasant and painful. That is the word that comes to mind in relation to the events of this past weekend. Graduation is the mark of an amazing accomplishment, even if it is not representative of a perfect GPA. I made it through four rigorous years of school and somehow managed to pass all of my classes (thanks to the very large curve in some). There were times that I wanted to give up. There were times I wanted to go back to the comfort of my own quiet room at home. But now that all is said and done, I’m sure glad I stuck with it.

The path through college is not only a journey to finish classes and receive a degree, but one that allows for you to discover where your passions lie, so you can hopefully make a career out of them someday. College is also a voyage of the inner individual. A voyage that allows you to test the water in all aspects of life, create a new identity for some, and push the limits away from the person you once knew growing up. While you may run into situations that force you to break down, there are plenty more that build you back up. Now as a college graduate from UC Santa Barbara, a university not only recognized for its student’s social life but for their stellar performance in the classroom, I know that I have a strong foundation which I can continue to build the rest of my life upon.

As I took a minute to reflect on my balcony the evening of graduation I began to cry. Santa Barbara had allowed me to grow exponentially both as a student and as an individual. The friendships founded on the UCSB campus are ones that will stay with me forever. Leaving was probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to endure. I can only hope for a future that will bring me the same amount of enjoyment I received during my four years in college. I do not know where I will be in three months let alone a year, but I can assure you that the wonderful memories will keep me happy and allow me to say that I am blessed to be a Gaucho.

Green City, USA

All over the world towns are doing things to be more “green”. Have you ever wondered which city is the greenest of all? The greenest town in America is Greensburg, Kansas. When I was thumbing through the paper a few Sundays ago I found this article on the town itself and all the outstanding green concepts that this town is making a reality. The town of Greensburg was flattened on May 4, 2007 by one of the strongest tornadoes with winds of 205 mph and a 1.7 mile wide footprint. When the townspeople gathered together to construct a plan to rebuild the town they structured their plan around energy efficiency and sustainable development. This brand new city educated and encouraged the community to rebuild homes as energy efficient as possible. The city created a dozen “eco-homes” to showcase the cutting-edge sustainable design to the community members. These homes consisted of energy efficient windows and appliances, better insulation, fuel-efficient heating and low-flow toilets. The city is slowly coming back to life day by day; they are in the process of building a school with geothermal heating, a wind turbine for electricity and hydrogen fuel cells for backup power. What amazed me when reading through the article was the large amount of money this town is receiving from our government. For example, the school they are building is costing $49.4 million but about $29 million is coming from federal funds and the balance from local taxpayers. I think it is encouraging to hear that the government is placing some of it's funds into eco-friendly living. This article also encouraged me to do small things around my own house to be more energy efficient such as: using energy efficient light bulbs, turning my computer off completely when I am not using it, turning off lights when leaving a room, washing clothes in cold water, taking shorter showers and using power strips. I know that I cannot rebuild a city myself so I figure I will do as much as I can as an individual as well as encourage family and friends to do the same. If we all do a little bit, that little bit will change the world one step at a time!
